What's on You Workdesk Wednesday 26th October 2011

I have missed a couple of weeks of WOYWW but know I can spend some time blog hopping, so am joining in again this week.  Nothing ultra-exciting on my work desk at the moment... I am a bit stuck.... when I was at the heirloom sale the other day and picked up the typewriter I also found a couple of old 78's (one of them is an old Nat King Cole record) and bought them immediately... they are the perfect size for covers for a mini book!!
I managed to cut a section off of each for binding the edge with my big Zutter Cutter.... but when I practiced with the BIA on the offcuts it just shattered into lots of little pieces!!   Eeeek... now I am trying to figure out how I will bind the pages and covers together without making holes in the records.  I have tried the obvious things like heating them and covering the edges with tape but these are pretty old and thick 78's... and they are very brittle.  I perhaps should have bought the thinner 33 LP's they had there instead!!
 Also on the edge of my desk is a dolly...
 I had to buy a new from the supermarket (i know, it is a crime but needs must and the local charity/goodwill didn't have even one old dolly.... not one and an old stuffed toy just wasn't going to give me the effect I am looking for)!! This one is going to be beheaded... and steampunked... and I am not sure if she is going to become a part of the typewriter yet... it depends how she turns out....

    Tee hee. Steampunk dolly. I've been watching The Guild ( online series about a group of game-players) and they encounter a steampunk group at a gaming convention. They are a hoot. And fab costumes.

    I think I would revert to old methods for your LP cover, maybe heat an awl with your embossing gun? Then ease it thru? Or maybe do a book tape binding or sticky baked canvas? I can see what I ran in my head but it's not translating to my typing finger.

    Whatever you manage, I know it will be cool

    ooh 78's great idea for book covers.. but as to how punch holes, not sure ..how about a hot needle, and some twine..?

    I keep meaning to get an old LP and warm it in the oven over a mug to make a dish (something I will eventually get around to I am sure!) - can you try warming it and then bending it around a wooden block or something? you would then have to make a book with a thick binding and just glue it in but it might work? like the idea of the steam punk dolly - I so dont do dollies though (it would frighten me!).

    You could always go for a concertina fold album and avoid needing to pierce altogether? just glue! So kind of you to rescue the poor dolly from being pink and turn her into something so much nicer ;)

    My DH used top have a mobile disco in his youth and refuses to get rid of his singles collection - we have thousands of the blighters in the attic... I would have offered you some but it might end in divorce!!

    you coudl try laminating it first so even if it shatters it will still reamin in one piece and be usable and perhaps more interesting? you coudl run a colour along the shatter lines - use the defect if it happens?

    love the beheading plans, yesterday My work friend asked where the phrase 'kick the bucket' came from which got us onto the topic of hanging (you know what nurses are like) and we went on to muse about pre guillotine and gallows proper where heads actually came off partially sometimes, and people took days to die from hanging, then we went Urggghhhh how inhuman
    and then realised we have made killing people all too easy now - rarely do you hear people go Ugghh but still we are killing....when did we make it so aesthetically neutral to do it?

    Great idea to use an old lp, pity it shattered. You could use a crop a dile, it makes holes in cds very smoothly

    Great idea to use an old '78 for book covers but I just couldn't cut one up - my youth you see. Would put it in the attic with the ones I have already.
    Not sure how you would make holes, or if you can as I think the '78s are different composition than old LPs (I know you can melt those).

    I think you may need to drill with a fine bit such as a Dremmel - that what I always use for all sorts of substrates - no promises with a record but it could work. Wonder what a corp-a-dile would do...might be better as it's just one whole at a time. I think the BIA is too much pressure over a big area. I thought I had an old record somewhere if I find it I will attack it with my CAD for you!

    How you can look at that little pink dolly and see a beheaded steampunked conversion is beyond me....such a great skill.
    The 78 idea is fab..one idea may be to cover a section in duct tape and drill through it - like they do with ceramic tiles that need holes....worth a try?!

I have some of those in the loft I think... as for punching holes... how about a Crop-a-Dile? mind you, I tried to go thru a Fragment once with a Crop-A-Dile and nearly ended up giving myself a hernia... mmm, am not much use really lol Hugs hun xx

    Aww poor dolly having her head cut off... This isn't something to do with dreadful Halloween I hope lol!!! Very imaginative use of old 78s. Hope you find a way to bind them. Also hope you kept the covers as they will make excellent raw materials for some sort of art!! Happy WOYWW, Shoshi #85

    Hope you checked that they were not valuable before you started on them???lol I remember everyone turning them into flower pots by putting them in the oven and then moulding them up into shape. May be you could push holes through at that stage instead....have fun.

    If you want holes in the 78s I think something hot and poky is likely to be your best bet but why not use the concertina spine already suggested and bind with sticky back canvas.

    A steampunked dolly...the mind boggles LOL

    Can't wait to see the stempunked dolly all finished...lol Maybe heating the album before you make the holes will soften it enough so it doesn't shatter. I think that's how they cut tiles back in the day.

    ooh...decapitated doll....cant wait to see it. Not sure about the records, maybe a fake card spine between the two and sticking out then cover it all with stickybacked canvas sticking everything with the red ultra sticky tape? Be interested to know how you fix it.

    Hubby, who is an Engineer, says, use a soldering iron or wire heated up in the fire!
    Looking forward to seeing it finished as I have some coloured LPs which I intend making a book for Hubby in his DJ days! Better go as he is sat next to me and I dont want him to know!! Shh!!

    Hmm I'm another one who thinks that a small drill bit (one with a pointed wood tip) or dremel type bit would be best. Also perhaps cover the space with a bit of masking tape similar to what you would do if drilling ceramic or glass, and either do it by hand or use a very slow drill speed. Not sure about the crop-o-dile because I suspect that they are more brittle with less plastic in them than CD's. Good luck with them and look forward to seeing the efforts of your labour!

    Love the idea of the steampunk dolly, can't wait to see it.

    As for the record, my solution would be to make tabs glued onto the binding edge and punch/bind the tabs (or rather the part of them that the record isn't sandwiched between)

    Poor little dolly, fancy beheading her, I could have nightmares about that one. I am interested to see how you solve the problem with the 78's. They certainly are brittle. I do remember sitting on one of my father's favourite records when I was small - it did not survive.

    As I began reading I thought "heat it up and then put holes in" but see you have tried that one. All I can think of is to put masking tape over and drill very carefully with a dremel. Wish I could be of more help.

    Had to pop back and explain the ankle bit ...sitting still, legs down, sometimes caused my ankle to swell and become painful ...usually if BP is up a bit.xx

    Sorry I missed WOYWW and your post last week. It has been a hellacious time for me, what with taking care of a friend's cats while she was on vacation and one of the cats getting very sick to the point of me thinking the cat was going to die.

    Sorry I'm no help with the LPs. I realize that you have done the one thing I would have suggested: heating the LP. Hope it works out and you come up with a way to bind them. I might suggest my crop-a-dile, but I don't have an old LP to play with to even know if it would work.

    Hi,
    I found your blog thru pinterest and am enjoying all I see. You have probably finished this album although I didn't see the finished product.
    I have made several of these and found the crop-o-dile to be the best thing for punching holes in the vinyl. You can punch a piece of cardstock or paper to use as a template for punching the holes. I've made mini's and purses and other things with the vinyl since I have an unending supply.
