What's on Your Work Desk 8th December 2010

It has been a busy week and nothing to do with scrapping!  I can print again though, so that is a huge bonus!  For some reason my new printer took huge umbrage with Vista and would not do its job, just hang there after the first couple of lines - which was very frustrating, one because I didn't have what I wanted printed and two, it had ruined a perfectly good piece of photographic paper!  Chris went out and bought me Windows 7 and installed it on my computer and the printer is all happy and printing merrily now... which means I have a week of Journal Your Christmas to catch up on, the rest of the Jessica Sprague class I was doing online and I missed out entirely the cyber crop on UKS this weekend. :(
The good news is that my Mum finally made it out here!!  She was supposed to be here Friday evening but her flight from Toulouse to Frankfurt was cancelled and they put her on a flight to Heathrow in the hope of catching the British Airways direct to Calgary.... it was not to be and she ended up sitting on the runway for 6 and half hours before they called it a day and put everyone in a hotel for the night.  We were on tenterhooks (what a weird word that is when you type it) all day Saturday as she was on standby for the BA flight and we had no idea if she was on it or not.... she was saving her mobile phone battery by keeping it switched off!! I know... but she is 77 and maybe this wasn't the emergency she thought she should be keeping it charged for.... so Chris and I tootled off to the airport in the hope that she would come through arrivals and very relieved when she did!!  Minus her suitcase... it got left in Heathrow and turned up the next day luckily!!
So this is what is on my workdesk - another Christmas tree!
I used my Fiskers punch for this version and quite like the monotone look of it.
Speaking of trees... I finally gave in and put our little tree with the climbing bears up yesterday.  I think it lacks impact and lights so will have to go and buy a set of cheapy ones - the reason I know it lacks impact?  Chris came home from work last night and ate dinner and then we sat in the lounge watching some TV and he failed to notice it.... until I pointed out to him that just to the left of the television was the tree... oh, yes, very nice dear....  LOL So flashing lights are on the shopping list!!
The bears are very cute though... and after sniffing it all over the two cats appear to have left it alone!!
I have seen a few of these tree cards on various blogs and decided to give them a go... I love the 3D effect of them but don't think I will be sending this version overseas in a hurry... chunky and large = excessive postage costs.
So they will be the 'hand to someone' type of card....
When we were in Costco last, Chris picked up these 3 reindeer (well, I think they are reindeer but I am sure Elizabeth will keep me straight because I have mistaken bears and mooses before) and I put them out on the sofa table yesterday to make the place a bit more festive and then I sat with a cup of coffee and was admiring my decorating handiwork and something struck me about the 3 reindeer... the two outer ones have a single acorn hanging off their arms but some idiot gave the larger centre reindeer two of them dangling from his crossed arms....
So is it just me??? LOL

  1. Oh MY! First I was laughing at your mom who wouldn't turn her phone on (boy, can I identify w/that one!) then I am just recovering and I read about your hubs not seeing the tree and then that reindeer story! Oh...I probably won't stop chuckling until I hit about 165 on WOYWW!

  3. Glad to hear that your mom made it safely. I like that tree card, but, as you said, the postage would be outrageous.

  4. Crying with laughter at your middle acorn set! oh dear! As for the tree - do men ever see beyond the end of their noses in their own home?! xxxx

  5. So glad your mom made it! And I like your little white tree (that one is my favorite). I laughed when I saw the strategically-placed acorns on the middle reindeer. That's a great conversation starter!

  6. What a post. Thanks for catching me up on things, and so glad your mom made it (finally). Chris is THE best hubby. First he bought you new software, then he was the PERFECT son-in-law by doing an airport run. So he missed seeing the tree. Lights will help, I'm sure.

I'm in awe of those trees you are making. I haven't made anything crafty yet this year, and this is tree four? And I want to know where to find directions for those tree cards. Even if I have to hand deliver them, they are TREE-mendous (bad pun).

And finally, yep, gotta agree that there is a great amount of humor in those animals that I really think are moose from their antlers. Deer antlers are much thinner. Of course, no one will notice the antlers when they are looking at the acorns!

  8. Nope - not just you!
Not much fun for your mum sitting on a runway for so long - and at 77 and on her own too. Glad it turned out fine.
Love that tree you have made - now need some instructions - think it is so classy. Thanks for showing. #21

  16. Oh nuts - no, I think it won't be just you - I was erm, a bit ahead of you! How funny. What about that tree with the bears, how fun - maybe you should stand it on a box or something, then add the lights if it's still not noticeable, and then if that fails, paint a large red arrow on the wall!!
Glad your Mum is safe and sound, gotta lot of empathy with the frustration of a switched off phone!!

  21. I wish I knew how to do those Christmas trees. I have tree envy! I admit I chickled about your Mom as I remembered that she had told you how to recognise her at the airport. See she didn't need her phone on as you would recognise her! your husband not seeing the tree is normal for most husbands isn't it? and the reindeer is just priceless. I wonder if they have them in Costco over here...

  22. Chortling to myself about your mum and the phone; she was clearly separated from my MIL at birth. Glad she is there safely, and that her case eventually made it too.

Loving your bears, and also the reindeer/moose (and particularly Mr Bashful in the centre).

  26. Oh dear, Annette! What a full post! And what a nice hubby you have for going out to buy new software and going to the airport when you didn't even know for sure whether your mom was on the plane. I'm glad she made it safely, but what a journey. Anyway, I think we can forgive him not noticing the tree (perhaps the TV program was too fascinating which I can't really imagine since there is always only crap...), at least this time.

Your tree card is beautiful, I admire how you always try something out that you see on other blogs and like. So far I did that only once.

Hm, yes, those are moose... and honestly, I wouldn't have noticed... I didn't look much beyond the antlers... I guess I need to change my way of looking! Or the photo was too small or I definitely need new glasses. Pick one.

As you can easily guess, I enjoyed your post tremendously!

  32. Those babies are definitely moose but I have a feeling no one is going to split hairs with you on it, they'll be too busy checking out their nuts!! Glad to hear Mum finally arrived safe and sound, my friends mum has a cell phone for emergencies too and keeps it turned off and in the boot of her car!! Love the tree cards, but definitely hand deliver only. Can't believe Chris missed the Christmas display! What a numptie!!

  35. I know all about Mothers with mobile phones. Mine is 91 and had it switched off because she was worried that the red light blinking at her on the desk charger ment it was about to blow up!!. Now I never even looked that low on the middle reindeer until you said!!!!!!!!! #91

  38. Oh dear.. bless your mum! Mine used to be the same with her mobile when she first got one.. she would only turn it on when she wanted to make a call... even if the call was to leave me a voicemail message that the train she was travelling on to come visit me was late... and then switch the phone off again so I couldn't call her back for more info! Argh!! *lol*

She's better now, thankfully. Glad to hear your mum made it to you in the end. :)

Love the xmas tree on the your desk and your other decorations too... oh and err.. no, it's not just you!

So glad your Mom finally arrived. What an ordeal. Been there myself; it took three days to get home from Ireland a number of years back; though I never did quite understand the whole reason because the weather wasn't bad there but apparently in Boston where we were supposed to land. ???
Merry Christmas. I have enjoyed reading your blog.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment, it is truly appreciated - sort of confirms that it is more than my Mum and husband that read this thing! :)
