WOYWW 2nd February 2011

Here we are at Wednesday again - I wonder how many people say wed nes day inside their heads when they spell the word?? Well, whether you are like me and do the wed nes day thing or not, it's that time of the week when lots (and I mean lots) of like minded folk pop along to peek into the world of other people's desks and what they are up to. My desk was tidied after the Dress Up doll got finished and I have just pulled some papers out to make a recipe book to hang in a kitchen.  I love these October Afternoon papers, they remind me of the school books I learned to read with - Janet and John.  Not sure any of our US and Canadian peeps will know Janet and John books but they were exceptionally proper wee folk and said things like:
"We can eat now" said Mother.
"Father is home from work.
Come children, we will eat our dinner."
The family ate and ate.
"This is a good dinner," said Father.
Thank you, Mother.
Thank you for the good dinner."
How we all ended reasonably normal after reading all that, I have no idea!! We certainly didn't talk that way in our house....
So, here is my rather boring desk... but hopefully you will see a finished book if you pop by later in the week!!
Ooh and on my other desk is this!!
Now, being English means that I have a fascination for mailboxes of this type.... because we don't have them! We have letter boxes in our front doors and the postman/lady puts the mail through and it falls on your doormat, which seems like a nice way to start the day unless its all brown envelopes with bills in them!
Chris took me to Value Village, which is a thrift shop and huge and it had loads of fun stuff in it.  I think he is trying to curb my spending and figures I can't do too much damage in a thrift shop!!  Now I have a problem... because someone has sat and painted this farm yard scene on it and it isn't my style so I want to get the papers out and cover it but every time I do, I feel bad that I am covering up someone else's artwork!
On Saturday we went out for the evening to a company 'do' and yes, we do this so rarely it is worth a mention so last week was a round of dress shopping, shoe shopping, hairdressers and nails and I now realise that I must be getting old as it was completely exhausting!
It was a good night and Chris even managed to get me on the dance floor.... even though my feet were killing me in my new lovely red shiny heels!! LOL

  3. Ahh what a nice pic of you and Chris. Can't even remember the last time I spiffed up like that! I would be tired too!

  4. Girl, if YOU don't want to change that mailbox, mail it to me and I'll alter it for you. Don't feel bad. That's what ALTERING is all about. Get out your papers and cover it. But be sure they will stick. You might need to sand before you get to the covering part.

Had to laugh at everything it takes to make "us" beautiful these days. Me? I'd be showing up in my high top tennis shoes. But you looked awesome. It's too bad those new shoes didn't get properly broken in.

BTW, I've never heard of Janet and John. I think we had Dick and Jane. See Dick run. Or maybe I just heard too many jokes when I was younger and have a distorted memory!

  5. That is a huge mailbox! Well, I can understand how you feel when you want to cover it with your lovely papers. I'd probably feel the same. So what are you going to do about it??

  10. You both look lovely in your new clothes! I bet you had a fun night. I would think it would be great to have the mail come into your door slot. Instead, here in the states we have to either drive to the post office, drive down the road to the mailbox, or go down to the end of the driveway to get the mail. Not fun in the winter!

    Your childhood books sound hilarious!
Have fun painting your mailbox. Thanks for sharing! Happy WOYWW~

  14. I love your desk and I also love october afternoon papers. I will keep an eye out for the finished project. You both look really happy in the photo and look like your enjoying yourselves. I have to agree I would want to change the letter box but also would feel guilty as the art on it is certainly different.

  15. Yep...I'm a wed nes day person LOL it's just such a silly word. Cute mail box but def not 'Annette'.

Lovely pic of you & Chris.

  16. I learned to read with Janet and John!! The language was SO stilted - but I still love reading, so it must have sunk in!!
You both look very glam on your night out!

  17. Oh you look lovely after your shopping trip! On the mailbox front you've done it justice - you've shared it with people who follow your blog lots and lots of people have now seen it - so you can give yourself permission to start afresh and put your take on it! - Take close ups of the mail box on your camera if you want - you could even mini book it as we all know Annette you are completely and utterly the Queen of mini books - so why not do that then grab the white paint and paint over it so the picture has gone and what you've got is what you wanted - which was a blank mail box to play with!

Hope you're having a fabulous day

    Hugs

  19. Terrific mailbox - I wish we had them in England too! And as for Wed-nes-day - I actually say it aloud, my kids think that's the correct way of saying it! I don't think I've said 'Wednesday' for years! ;-)

  28. Sometimes I wish the mail just popped through your door (on rainy/snowy/cold days) but we are lucky in our neighbourhood that we still get it to our mailbox...soon we will have to go to a mall and pick it out of a mailbox there. Mailmen loosing their jobs to save Canada Post money.
I say go ahead and cover it, make it your own.

  30. That recipe book sounds fun and will look amazing with those papers.
I do think that Janet and john had an subliminal affect on us ...well on my generation who still felt that the man was boss even though we were teens in the sixties and experienced women burning their bras lol.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Looking forward to seeing those recipe hangers later on. I am a wed nes day person as well! I had forgotten about the Janet and John books, Terry Wogan used to do spoof ones on the radio a few years ago as well! K x #90

  32. It tires me out these days just thinking about getting all spiffed up, but you both look great! Cute mailbox, not your style but it looks quite well done, I suppose if it ended up in a thrift shop then I wouldn't worry about it too much!

  33. Ooh, I just love red shoes, always have done since I was a wee girl. And, like you, I have a fondness for those postboxes, they are so quaint. On the subject of Janet and John books I'm sure that they did have similar books in US schools because in the book, The Bluest Eye written by Toni Morrison extracts from a school textbook is one of the main features and if I remember rightly it was very similar to our Janet and John books. BTW, this book is well worth reading. Like Kathryn, I remember Terry Wogan's version of the J&J books - hilarious and very naughty. Thanks for letting us see these photos. Elizabeth x #96

  34. Glad you had a good time but really want to see those lovely red shoes!!! I was a Peter and Jane reader but know what you mean as they were a similar sort of thing LOL. I know how you feel about the mailbox but if you don't like it then there is no point in having it so be brave and go for it - can't wait to see what you come up with!

  35. The October Afternoon papers are lovely! But not half as gorgeous as YOU! Well, it may have tired you out to get all gussied up for your do but I would say it was well worth it! You look gorgeous!
And yes, we had Dick and Jane and of course Leave it To Beaver on tv!
    Happy WOYWW!

  38. OOOOH I LOVE red shoes! You know what they say about women who wear red shoes don't you?
Those October afternoon papers are lovely and so is your postbox. Must admit farm animals are not really my thing, but they are cute. Now that you have taken a picture, I think its OK to cover it.

  39. Fun post and I love the mailbox!!
About the snippet roll, I used white T-shirt transfer paper which will go through an ink jet printer if you have one. Fill your page with pics then when printed cut them out and iron them onto fabric or card, just peel the backing off and you have a great image, it's that easy! Like you i thought it would be a great project to take on holiday! have fun! Mx

  40. I know what you mean about the British having a fascination for American post boxes - my Hubby got me a full sized one sent from America with absolutely nothing on it through his counterpart in US so I could "alter" it and I managed to get a Maya Road paper one. Have I done them? - Not yet!!! LOL
He did the same with a lunchbox too but I HAVE altered that one and use it all the time for my Cosmo Shimmer sprays etc!
I remember Janet and John!!! LOL!!!

  41. You look fancy enough to be going to a candlight supper :D. I think it's your mailbox now and you can do with it as you like. It's not old enough to swap it out for a new one to alter :D. Luscious papers. TFS!

    ReplyDelete
  42. My, but don't you look lovely in your posh frock! I'm glad you had a good time and had the opportunity to treat yourself!

Yes, I'm a Wed Nes Day-er too, I fess up!

I do remember the Janet & John books, and wonder if perhaps we ought to have kept the children reading them just a tad longer.... but that's just me being old fashioned.

As for your darling mailbox - go for it. What's the worst that can happen? You have to start again.... and knowing you that's highly unlikely!

  43. Its all about taste and the mailbox was painted in someone elses taste - so now give it a new lease of live and make it your taste. Love the picture of your spruced up - I thought party shoes were for wearing there and then carrying home - thanks for sharing ~ Nicky 12

  44. Like the papers on your desk. Very nice. I can't wait to see the finished product. The mailbox would be a problem but I think I would go ahead and cover it and claim it as your own! They enjoyed it for a while now it is your turn. Looks like you had a fun time both getting ready to go out and going out.

  47. Sounds like a fun evening! You both look so spiffy. Love the promise of a recipe card holder, especially using the October Afternoon paper.

Love the mailbox! Sadly, I would feel no guilt altering it. After all, it found it's way to the thrift store, didn't it?

    Happy WOYWW!

  51. Hi there, I wouldn't have any qualms about altering that letterbox! I was once given a small black vase because I was "crafty" and it had some amateurish painting on it. I didn't really like it and when I washed it the paint came off! Oh dear!

  52. Some rather pretty papers on your desk there and love the farmyard images on your post box.

  53. Ah I do miss a traditional mailbox. Esp. sins the US letter size envelopes from the US don't quite fit in an A4 size letter slot....

Looking forward to seeing the book "pop up" later in the week

Hope you had a great WOYWW!

  54. That mailbox is gorgeous, personally I wouldn't want to touch it but if its not your style then its gotta be done. Could you not make some kind of cover that would fit over it leaving the surface intact? Not sure whether you are a seamstress but some kind of padded embroidered affair would be gorgeous... hmm although not weatherproof, lol

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ah yes, I was a Dick and Jane girl too. Gosh, they were such a happy family and always so clean! The mailbox would be a bit of a dilemma for me too, but I say just take a "before" and "after" photo so you have it just in case antiques roadshow hunts you down.
And funny, you don't look exhausted, you look dang good!
