I have moved desks for today's What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday... I am around the corner at my sewing machine.... see what I got??? I saw this Graphic 45 Communique fabric on Mary Anne's desk a few back and when I asked her to give it to me (LOL) she told me that Julia and her had gone fabric shopping at a store near Julia.... so I asked Julia if she would mind getting me some and she did, what a star! It arrived on Monday and I have been itching to play with it since I opened the package.
This panel is fabulous and has all my favourite images from the paper range and I was sort of stuck as to what I could do to it... it would be a crime to chop it up, but like scrapping paper that is too finished, you are left wondering what your input to the process could be that wouldn't be detrimental.
So last night in bed, when I should have been sleeping, this idea came to me... if I padded certain images and sewed around them... then put the entire thing on quilt matting, they might stand proud from the flat... so if anyone out there has done this and can tell me the pitfalls... would you yell now please?
It is still winter here... but I can't compain because though the nights get cold the days are a balmy 23 - 25 degrees C. In my front garden there are numerous palms of different types and this one fascinates me...
Doesn't that look like some sacking or hessian to you? I would love to peel some off and play with it but I am thinking spiders might live in there.... big fat hairy Australian spiders... urgh...
and I loved the effect of the sun shining through the underside of this palm leaf....
Don't forget to check out Julia and the linky list for lots of lovely desks!!
It's always good to have friends who will go above and beyond for you. Julia is such a sweetheart, anyway, it's not hard to fathom she would run this fabric down for you. I know you're a G45 gal, so this has your name ALL OVER IT.
ReplyDeleteI don't sew like that. I sew things together I can tear. So, I'm no help when it comes to giving sewing advice. I'm sure SOMEONE will have the answers you are looking for, though. Especially since there are several seamstresses whose desks we visit each week.
Wonderful stitching...what fun fabric! Happy WOYWW! Sandy Leigh #11
ReplyDeleteThat fabric is fantastic, that has to inspiring to work with!
ReplyDeleteHappy woyww to you!

G45 fabric didn't know they made it but it's so kewl to see :) hugs Nikki 7
ReplyDeleteI'm no help at all with anything sewing related, Annetee, but I do know a stunning photo when I see it! That beautiful frond picture could be sold as a print. And do stay out of the palms because of ew spiders! Happy WOYWW and have a wonderful week! Darnell #12
ReplyDeleteHi Annette,
ReplyDeleteThat fabric looks fabulous! Can't wait to see what you do with it! Oh, and you might be right about the spiders hiding in that palm. I recommend heavy duty gardening gloves :)

Lucky you to get that fabric, it is just gorgeous!! I have two palm tress left in the yard and one I want cut down!!
ReplyDeleteKrisha #19
Graphic 45 is my favorite paper and to learn it comes as fabric!! Oh, be still my heart!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your sewing desk!
Lynn #21
I love that G45 fabric. I wouldn't be able to cut it up. Happy crafting #1
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric. Julia is so wonderful to send it to you. Can't help with the sewing as I'm allergic to sewing machines. I have to say that balmy doesn't start here until at least 28 deg, I still have a jumper on.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, enjoy the sunshine and the Ekka, if you're going.
Von #33
I can't help with your sewing question, but I join with the love for the fabric! The palms are beautiful - must provide some lovely shade. Have a great week. Helen 6
ReplyDeleteWow! G45 paper! I so know what you mean about cutting things up and thinking what can I add to this, it's already too fabulous! I often feel that with G45! It hurts me to cut it more than it hurts the paper, I swear. The sun shining through that palm is so lovely. I went walking in the woods with my DH yesterday and the sun shining through oak leaves was sensational - different vegetation to yours but isn't nature amazing wherever you are? Happy WoYWW! Julie Ann xx #41
ReplyDeleteI too noticed that fabric on her desk...I went to my local quilting store to see if I could get it - NOPE. Now Julia might have a new thing to add to her list of jobs...fabric shopping for WOYWWers! I did find it on line...might order it there....#43
ReplyDeleteGorgeous fabric and I am sure a woyww will be able to give your great tips for quilting. You are learning fast to be very cautious around Australian spiders. I am sure the Date/Palm (I think) tree will drop some of the fibre eventually then it will be safe to play.
ReplyDeleteSandra @46
A also get my best ideas when I can't sleep. Good for us, but it is sometimes important to sleep.
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW, #42 Uuna
So nice that you got the fabric! It´s really lovely. Love your palm pics, too. I guess the weather here in Finland is about the same than you have - but here it is summer...
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!
Tuire #53
Lucky you with that fabric. Am sure you will find somewhere online to help you(sorry, I am useless). How fabulous and what you are thinking of seems perfect to me.
ReplyDeleteYes, does resemble sacking but I too would not peel for fear of spiders! Love the palm too with the sunlight showing through. Perhaps you could enlarge the photos in some way and use them or parts of them.
Hugs, Neet xx #50
Great work space you have and love your sewing mat...Love the idea of the quilt, I too am in the throes of making quilts and having loads of fun. Live in the QLD tropics so yes I know the hessiany stuff on that fan palm and have been known to cut some off but don't actually think I used it. Love you turntable drawers, might have to investigate them. Cheers RobynO #51
ReplyDeleteGreat work space and love the sewing mat. Cool idea with the quilt, I've been sewing this week too and having lots of fun. Living in QLD tropics I know the hessiany stuff on the fan palms and have been know to cut some off but can't remember actually using it. Love your turntable drawers might have to check out spotlight myself. Cheers RobynO#51
ReplyDeletewe have a hairy palm like that in our spanish garden....it's stringy bark and gets harder as it ages...we also lop the big fronds off the outside to make it bark-y. i knew you'd be onto the fabric as soon as it arrived! Love your olan..why wouldn't that work?!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine living anywhere with big fat hairy spiders......the ones we have here are far too big for my liking. I love your fabric and will be watching with interest as to what you're going to do with it.
ReplyDeleteHugs,

Love the photo through the leaf
ReplyDeleteHow kind that Julia got the fabric for you
Jackie 29
That fabric is super and I'm sure you'll create something that shows it off equally well.
ReplyDeleteWow to that palm tree - the shot up through the fronds is fabulous.

Ah now there is something I can relate to, sewing. You may know I am partial to fabric: and sewing. Of course now I have to do an Internet search!!!!

Graphic 45 do fabric? How did I miss that one!!!!!! GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS. Looking forward to seeing where you take this project - I wouldn't be able to cut it up either! MMx #65
ReplyDeleteFabulous fabric...... you could do with a "walking foot" and attachment which will stitch the padded layer without rucking them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and how nice to have such perfect temperature for Winter.
lots of love Jo x
I don't sew but that G45 panel caught my eye a few weeks back also. That's so lovely of Julia to get you some and I can't wait to see what you do with it. Loving your palm too, is that a Bismark?, I couldn't tell by the color/light in your photo. Have a great week and Happy WOYWW! Danie #14
ReplyDeleteLove the fabric!! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article. Wonder which shop Julia got it from?
ReplyDeleteAnd that green from pic is fab :-)
Hugs, LLJ 58 xx
fabulous fabric, best of luck with your idea's. Only done very basic quilting here so no help to you. Your temperatures sound good to me, our heatwave in the UK is gone for now, but during it the nights were just awful.
ReplyDeleteLynda #82
That fabric is gorgeous - a really imaginative idea, and I love the idea of quilting around certain sections. It will look great.
ReplyDeleteLove the palm tree pics too - beautiful leaves with the sun filtering through.
Happy WOYWW,
Shoshi #75
Lovely. But I know you - you'll probably jump right in and manage to make something fabulous with it before I do anything with my panel, even with the mailing time and you having only just gotten it! I have a plan, but the PLAN keeps changing.
ReplyDelete:)
Happy WOYWW!

Fabulous material sounds like a good idea you've had. Good luck! Love the palm. Be careful there's all sorts of minute critters that live in them! I know....we have lots of palms in Florida and a born and raised here person told me not to play with the cool stuff the palms drop!! Happy WOYWW! Nan G #8
ReplyDeleteHi hope you have a fab week - Happy WOYWW - Mxx #97
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is so gorgeous but anything with G45 on it is always fab. Happy WOYWW. Pam#40

Hello, Im Roberta 106, Im on my 2nd week of this and looking at every ones goodies has really got me doing things..now I cant wait till mine looks nice and tidy like yours. My Daughter LOVEs g45 I wounder if she has seen this yet. Thanks for letting me peek around. Bright Blessing to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteI am familiar with Graphic 45 paper, never knew they had fabric! Looks gorgeous! (I don't sew, but this makes me wish I did!) The photos of your plants are goregous. The great shadows! Winnie#76
ReplyDeleteI guess if you stitched wadding on your favoutite bits you could always snip a little slash in the wadding and then add extra stuffing from the back. This would pad them out more - then you stitch up the little slash. x Jo
ReplyDeleteyep she saw and loves it. she is right above me. tera
ReplyDeleteRoberta 110 I gave the wrong number b4
Thank you for your nice comments, It's funny i'm a Holtz addict and didn't think of the tissue paper, but i'd need a lot of it and i'd have to do a base layer to cover the colors/images on the boxes, but that's an idea i'm also keeping in mind!!
ReplyDeleteAlso the lady above me (Roberta) is actually #110 this week :D

Great space tfs xx Jan (80)

Beautiful fabric, good to have this group and friends to work together for the good of getting what we want in the craft world. Kim
ReplyDeleteHiya, TY for the looky-loo. Always makes me smile. I'm not much of a sewer, my sewing machine and I don't really see eye to eye, but that fabric is fantabulous. I can see your vision, but alas I can offer no advice on achieving it. :( That straw stuff on your Palms is very cool, and it does look like a sack. (never heard of hession) I am terrified of spiders, so it would be my luck one would jump on me. Don't they get big over your way?? Poisionous too??? I have been known to scream like a girl and knock people over to get out of the way of a spider. It's funny, I think cuz it's summer here, it's summer everywhere. I hope you are achieving greatness with your G45 fabric. Have a great weekend. (((HUGS)))

WOYWW #4
Oh Wow this is gorgeous fabric and now I want some! I am with Jo in that you should use a walking foot on your machine so all the layers are walked through at the same time thereby preventing ruckling.

I'm not an expert, but I made a wall hanging with the technique you are describing years ago. Since the background of the fabric was dark enough, I basically pinned a piece of muslin to the back of the area I wanted to puff out and sewed around from the front. I trimmed the fabric from outside the stitching, made a slit, & tucked in some polyester filling. When I thought it was stuffed enough I whip stitched the back closed. I did it here and there on the panel with no problems.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely comment, Vonnie - so glad you liked the anniversary swap photos. Shame on me for taking a whole year to get round to sharing it!

It's good to have pals Annette, I think my blogging pals now outnumber my real life ones, and they'd do anything for you too! Like your finished Kaiserkraft chest, you're right about painting it brown too, it looks great. Have a great weekend.

I am loving your idea of what to do with the amazing G45 fabric I think the images will stand very proud.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you with spiders but what a shame as I bet that would be wonderful to play with
Have and extra special WOYWW and week
